Whole Person Care Mid-Point Check-In

This paper was made possible by funding from the California Health Care Foundation and published by the Department of Health Care Services.

The Whole Person Care (WPC) pilots, born out of California’s Medi-Cal 2020 waiver, encourage counties, cities, hospital authorities, health plans, providers, and community-based organizations to harness their collective resources to provide essential care coordination and other wrap-around services to Medi-Cal beneficiaries. The WPC pilots, run by counties, cities, and local health systems, began implementing their programs in 2017 and run through December 31, 2020. This paper explores WPC implementation efforts through their mid-point in December 2018, outlining the challenges and successes the pilots experienced in the first half of the program and discussing opportunities for sustaining promising practices beyond 2020.
